Movement
The ability to move undetected is one of the most important skills that a
paintball snipers can have. Choosing how, when, and with what speed to
move make all the difference. The method in which a sniper will move can
make all the difference.
Varying techniques include simple walking, crouch walking, the high crawl,
the medium crawl, and the low crawl. When no one is looking and there is
little to no chance of being spotted by the other team a simple walk is
okay. When there is a greater chance of the opposing team in the area a
slow crouch walk is a good idea. When there it is known that the
opposing team is near a sniper should switch to a crawl. The high crawl,
up on the hands and knees and using both arms and legs to move, is the
quickest form of crawling but it is also gives the sniper the tallest
silhouette. It should only be used when either other players are not
looking directly in the snipers direction or there is adequate cover to hide
the movement. The medium crawl is much slower but also has a much
lower silhouette. This form of the crawl is performed while on the stomach
and uses both the hands and legs to move. It is the quickest form of the
crawl that should be used when there is little to no natural cover. The low
crawl is the slowest but is also the least likely to be detected. It is also
performed on the stomach but only uses the toes and fingers to push the
sniper along. Using the correct movement technique can make all the
difference in any game.
The choice of when to move is very important. Moving with outside noises
like marker fire, wind, airplanes, and vehicle sounds will mask any sounds
that a snipers movement will create.
Movement speed is also very important. Human eyesight picks up on
quick and sudden movement. The slower the sniper moves the less likely
they will be detected by other players. Sometimes just remaining still for a
couple of minutes can throw off a person who has actually seen you. Most
paintball players believe that unless someone is shooting at them there is
not anyone there. Therefore by remaining still and not doing anything
they will think that there is no one in the area.
